The New Road Bed
This bed was full of weeds and a poor-looking palm tree when we started working on it in 2021. We did our best every year to make it look good, but sadly the palm tree and its roots overtook the bed, while the tree itself never looked great.
Furthermore, the shrubs allowed youngsters to hide in the bed to smoke, vape and carry out other activities, leaving all their rubbish for us to collect and a smell that overwhelmed us whilst weeding.
The group approached SMTC for permission to completely revamp the bed and, after two years, it was finally agreed. We emptied the bed last year following the death of Bridget Simmons, a Bloomer from the very beginning, whose funeral donations were left to the group.
We decided to focus mainly on roses to prevent the activities that had happened before, and also concentrated on yellow and red planting. It now looks amazing throughout all the seasons and it is a joy to garden there.
